This 1998 Gibson Custom ES-5 is a high-end Custom Shop reissue of one of Gibson’s most elaborate electric archtop guitars. It recreates the classic ES-5 design from the late 1940s–early 1950s and was built in relatively small numbers in the Nashville Custom Shop.
The Gibson ES-5 was introduced in 1949 as an electric counterpart to the famous Gibson L-5 jazz archtop. It was one of the earliest guitars to feature three pickups, giving players far more tonal control than typical two-pickup designs.
The model disappeared in 1962 but was revived in 1995 by Gibson’s Custom Shop, making late-1990s instruments like the 1998 version part of that reissue era.
