-Mike Lull basses are highly regarded for their craftsmanship, tone, and playability. Mike Lull, the founder, started the company with the idea of combining vintage-inspired designs with modern touches. He created basses known for their smooth necks, solid build, and great tone that works well across various genres, especially rock, jazz, and funk.

Their models range from J-style to P-style basses, but they’re typically customized to a player’s specifications. The attention to detail and ability to fine-tune the sound of each instrument is something that has kept them popular among professional bassists.

About the maker

  • Mike Lull started as a technician and luthier in the Pacific Northwest, crafting instruments and repairing guitars. His work eventually evolved into his own line of custom instruments.

  • The company is based in Bellevue, Washington (just outside Seattle).

  • Mike Lull passed away in 2020, but the shop continues under his son Spencer Lull and longtime staff, carrying on the custom work and his legacy.

What makes a Lull bass special

Some of the features and hallmarks that set them apart:

  • High-end construction: Graphite-reinforced maple necks, contoured neck heels for playability, optional chambered bodies for lighter weight.

  • Premium hardware & electronics: Hipshot Ultralite tuners, aluminum bridges, full electrostatic shielding, choice of passive or active electronics (e.g., Bartolini or Aguilar systems) in many models.

  • Custom-wound pickups: Many models use custom Lindy Fralin or Seymour Duncan pickups (or Lull-designed) rather than off-the-shelf.

  • Boutique feel: These are hand-built, made in the USA, with options for woods, finishes, scale lengths, 4- or 5-strings, sometimes 6. They tend to be priced accordingly.

  • Playability and ergonomics: The spec-sheets emphasise lighter weight, comfortable contours, and versatile tonal range — for modern and vintage styles.
